FCP Color and ATI Radeon 9600
on Dec 11, 2007 at 9:35:13 pm

I currently running FCP 5 on my Dual 2GHz with an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 64mb.

If i upgrade to FCP 6, will I be able to use the new color correction feature? The specs on the apple site have me a bit worried.

Also, am i "SOL" when it comes to the new ProRes codec 4:2:2 10 bit?

love to get some expert advice before i upgrade.

thanks.

ProRes will work OK I'd think, but you need a beefier card to run Color and Motion 3... take a look at ATI's X1900 for your particular Mac.

thanks for the quick response. I think the x1900 is only for PCI-e, and my box is PCI-x.

is there another card I can get?

So, will Color just flat out not work with my Radeon 9600?

We have the nVidia Ultra 6800 in our G5 Dual 2.0. That runs Color just fine.

thanks walter. Could you tell me the exact specs on that card so i can price it out.

Is it just nVidia Ultra 6800? there seems to be a few different ones on the web.

thanks.

[Berry Helfand] "Is it just nVidia Ultra 6800? there seems to be a few different ones on the web."

Not really sure. It used to be the "Upgrade Graphics Card" from Apple so it came in an Apple box at the time. To be honest, we only use Color sparingly on that machine as it is our oldest in the fleet. ATI cards are definitely better for Color in my experience, but this does work.

Is the ATI x800XT still around? I thought that was a PCI-X card? Maybe not, it's been a while.

I bought an x800 last month. I just checked on CDW & Otherworld Computing, they both have x800s in stock.

Yup. You want the "Mac Edition". It's an 8x AGP card specifically for PCI-X macs. I have it in a dual 2.5.

You might be able to play ProRes material, but you wont be able to capture ProRes in HD.

We have the ATI Radeon X1900 (which is the Power PC PCIe version) for 2 of our 2.3 Dual Core G5s. Sounds like this guy doesn't have PCIe so it wouldn't really work for him.

That said, recently we have had problems with 3rd party plugins in Motion 3 and currently suspect a conflict with this specific graphics card. This is not confirmed, but if anyone else has a similar setup I'd love to talk to you about running some simple tests.

I have the same graphics card in a MacPro. (it's not PPC but intel)

What are you seeing? I recently have had some display issues from FCP and I can't really track it down to the graphics card, but it's my first suspect.

Well since you have an Intel it may not apply to you, but two things.

1) there is a firmware update for your card (but not mine) available on Apple website

2) try download the free trial of Magic Bullet Looks or BCC5FXPlug. both work awesome in FCP but do not work in Motion 3. If you apply BCC it turns the clip black, or if you hit the edit button in Magic Bullet it will launch the other interface but does not pass the image through.

So far the best I deduce is that this is a problem with how Motion 3 is coded to handle 3rd Party FXPlug plugins and the interaction with the ATI drivers for this card. Since you technically have a different card this problem may not be reproducible on your system. Again this is all unconfirmed test, I am to placing blame on any of these product manufactures. BCC and Red Giant have so far been very helpful with me and all the testing that I have done. We are still looking for a solution.

Thanks for giving it a shot though,
-Sam
