lost easy setups
on Apr 16, 2007 at 9:12:29 pm

I'm using FCP 5.1.4 on a Power PC quad 2.5, and whenever I trash my FCP preferences, I lose the easy setups I've created. They're still in my custom settings folder, but they don't show up in my easy setups list. What's causing this, and is there a way of calling them up again without having to re-create them?

You need to be using a utlity that will "trash" your peferences, but save all of your custom settings.

A great way to do this is to use "FCP Rescue" a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

Its because those custom settings are stored in your preference files.

Like the last person said use FCP Rescue it creates a backup of your good preference files that it uses to replace the ones that have gone bad.

you might even want to go one step futher and use FCP Attic from

does the same as FCP Rescue, but lets you also back up custom keyboards, button bars, window layouts etc plus you can choose your backup location (in order to more easily facilitate migrating your settings between machines)

When you bring up the easy setup window (control-q) make sure to hit the little show all checkbox.
