Its never been possible to "work backward" in past versions.

You might be able to export an EDL and do work based on that, but the FCP 5 timeline/project should not open in 4x.

Yes you can. Via XML. Read this

I was dealing with this problem with an editor just yesterday. We found XML largely did the job but that markers didn't export. We were doing rough and fast tests, though, so perhaps there is a way of transferring markers which we weren't aware of.

Otherwise, everything else we focused on -- clips, subclips, and sequences, all transferred between programs with no issues using XML.

Hi CowCowBoogie

I tried this the other day, exporting an xml document of a 5.02 project, and importing it into 4.5. However, after selecting the xml doc to import, I was then asked to choose a translation document as well. I had no idea what this was and when i cancelled, FCP reported that there was an error and was unable to open the xml file, any ideas what i could try differently to get this to work?

Cheers
