HDV and FCP problems

can anyone help? i'm trying to capture and edit HDV on FCP 5.0.2.

i've pulled down HDV 1080i from esy set up as well as Apple Intermediate Codec HDV 1080i but i always need to render my footage in my timeline to view it properly.

it seems like the sequence settings are always wrong... aspect ratio etc

do i need a new codec? i've been reading about 4.0.2 - is this what i need

thanks

Hi Neil, I'm in the same boat right now! See below

Do not use the Apple Intermediate Codec, ever.

It was a bodge job before the HDV codec was released.

Use the HDV codec, should be in FCP already.

I always install the latest blackmagic codecs, I'm not sure if this makes any difference in this case, but it's never a bad thing to do. http://www.decklink.com

You should look at my thread below that Walter Biscardi and Steve Connor have been involved with, it's all about capturing HDV into FCP 5.0.2

Have you set the easy setup to HDV 1080i and then created a new sequence after that? This is not a problem that is being reported at all.

That can happen depending on your hardware setup. It's a good tip to put your hardware/software setup in your profile so people can answer question like these quicker.

Do you any HD output cards in your system?

I am having trouble editing HDV with a 1 gig G4 that has 1.5 gigs of ram. I captured everything and it plays fine in the veiwer window and a full clip will play fine on the time line. But if I make an edit to the clip, it is no longer able to be viewed without rendering. It has no realtime editing capablities. I talked to the genius bar at an Apple store and they don't even know if Final Cut can edit HDV at realtime. Do I need more ram, a G5, or to convert everything to DV just to get through the project?
