Can I copy codecs from one machine to another?
on Jan 13, 2017 at 4:38:05 pm

I recently bought a new iMac that I will eventually use for editing. In the meantime I am using FCP 7 on a very old Mac Pro. For now, I would like to do some file conversions and encoding on the new machine. As the Pro codecs do not come installed on new machines, can I copy those from the old machine to the new, and, if so, where do I find them?

HD / Library / Quicktime

I've copied this way.

Warren,

I only see a few of the codecs listed there. Are they spread out in different locations?

Try System / Library / Quicktime.

How do you plan to do the file conversions? If you use Apple Compressor ($49) it comes with the Pro codecs. Problem solved.

Download and install Quicktime 7. That should do it.

For right now, I am using Clipwrap and Quicktime. I have Quicktime 7 on the system, but it doesn't come with the pro codecs.

Why don't you buy Compressor then? That will get you the Pro codecs that you need.

I have the codecs. I just need to know where to find them and how to copy them from the old machine to the new.

Well Warren Eig already said to check here:
Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime
Macintosh HD/System/Library/QuickTime
I also have codecs here:
Macintosh HD/Library/Video/Professional Video Workflow Plug-Ins
Not sure what codec you are looking for but those are the three places I've found codecs on my Mac.

Thanks for responding, John. One of the codecs I am looking for are the XDCAM codecs, and they are not at any of those locations.

Have you tried manually installing Apple Pro Video Formats 2.0.4? That has support for XDCAM EX / HD / HD422 in it. Not sure if it will install without having pre-requisite software installed but it's worth a try.
