Export best quality still images
on Oct 14, 2016 at 12:42:28 pm

A festival has asked for hi-res images from our documentary, but anything FCP exports as a still is @ 72 dpi. Is that the best I can give them (I know print media wants at least 300 dpi). Thx

Video is indeed 72dpi - you can increase the numbers in Photoshop, but it won't change anything but the numbers, the true resolution will be 72dpi even if you change the number to 300 or 600dpi.

Yup. Count the pixels. I'll guess the video's 1920x1080.

The "D" in "DPI" means "dot"... or in TV lingo, "pixel"

So to maintain a 1-to-1 relationship of pixels to dots at 300 dpi, your image would be 6.4 inches wide and 3.6 inches high. Do you need something bigger than that?

There are third-party upscaling applications out there, and they DO help, but they can't work miracles. You're going to lose some resolution. But I don't know if I'd worry too much; I can watch HD video on my phone, and I can watch HD video on a 60-inch TV set. They both display the same resolution.

Thanks, Dave.

Just as I figured.
