Best Way to make a Blu Ray?
on Sep 19, 2016 at 10:05:58 pm

I don't own Adobe products but will buy them if I need to.

What is the simplest way to create a Blu Ray with a menu?

I am using FCP 7 and Compressor.

FCP Legacy never supported Blurays that actually worked, and Adobe has EOL'd (end of legend) Encore. You will need to find an old version of Encore or Toast.

i seem to rememberer making a BluRay out of FCP that worked,
i could be wrong, i know we gave up as they were generally too troublesome for the time involved!

you do it via the Share menu.

Compressor can make simple Blu Rays, too
if it doesn't offer you that when you open it, got to the FIle Menu > New Batch from Template.
i remember there being an option for simple menus,
but i can't see it now in compressor,
maybe that's only when using the FCP Share function?

Nick, your memory in this particular case is faulty. While you can encode to a spec in Compressor that supposedly works for Bluray, when you try to make an actual Blu-ray Disc in DVD Studio Pro will NOT create working Blurays, especially one with menus. While some people did figure out a way to make Blurays that "might" play in a set top player, as far as I know, no one ever successfully made a Bluray with a menu structure that actually worked. Walter Biscardi wrote extensively on the subject...

well the good news is that FCP and Compressor do both have options to make a Blu-Ray.
not just make the h264 that you have to then take into another app for burning, but make it to completion, in one step.

once you have chosen the Blu-Ray option, there's a further button (Compressor) or Check box (FCP Share) "Create Blu-Ray disc"
and this is where the (very) simple menu function is hidden.

Why would we need an old version of Toast? Hasn't this software been updated regularly?

Commas are now passé, but in this case leaving one out gave you a false impression Robert. I intended to suggest an old copy of Encore, or a copy of Toast, not an old copy of both.

Are we clear now?

Adobe Encore CS6 still works. I author Blu-rays all the time with it. It's EOL'd but doesn't mean it's useless.

I use CS6 to do blurays in Encore too. I also prefer Adobe Encoder to make the m4v files. I don't like their Dolby digital encoder for 5.1 audio so I still use the one in Compressor although it is now a PITA to plug and power up the old MacPro.
