Export 12 separate audio tracks
on Jul 30, 2016 at 3:08:42 pm

I have a sound mix coming up, and so I need to exports all 12 separate tracks, some mono, others stereo, for the sound mixer. I've done all mixing on FCP for years, but this is for a long form doc, and I've decided to get a specialist's help.

The problem is, when I export AIFFs some channels have nothing on them in places where I know a music track or something else exists.

I've set the Audio Output Preset at both stereo 12 tracks and then Mono, but the same problem occurs.

This feels as if it ought to be simple. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance,

Gerret

are you sure this is the best way forward?

exporting an OMF with levels and transitions would give your sound mixer everything in your timeline with the option of handles on every edit

alsot it DOESN'T bake in any EQ and reverb you may have done, letting them do a better job.

it's generally preferred.

What Nick said. Exporting each track as a separate AIFF file is far from the typical workflow. Sound mixers like to be able to manipulate each audio file separately. Doing what you suggest would be like someone giving you a single QT file of your feature and asking you to color correct it. Anything you apply goes to ALL the images, so you'd need to chop it up. Exporting an AAF (not OMF, that's OLD) is the preferred method. Confirm with your audio mixer.

Sorry for the delay (I've been out of the country, without internet access), and thanks for the info.

I can't see how to export AFF files. Do I need a plugin of some kind?

The option is called EXPORT TO PROTOOLS. How you get there depends on the version of Avid you are running. They changed up the menu options in 8.5. In 8.5.x, you go FILE>OUTPUT>EXPORT TO FILE, and then in the dropdown menu at the bottom of the window that appears, you select EXPORT TO PROTOOLS.

Problem is I'm not in Avid, I'm in FCP 7.

Is there a way to export AAFs?

HA! I'm in too many forums. And that means that my initial advice is also wrong.

You can't export AAFs out of FCP. OMF is your only option....and it's a good one if your sequence is short. If you have a longer sequence, say 45-120 min, the OMF might need to be broken up, as they have a file size limit. The plugin that allowed for better, more robust OMF exports has been discontinued for a while, as FCP has been discontinued for a while.
