FCP can't play imported avi/mov files

What's up everybody?

I want to re-edit some parts from the classic blaxploitation flick "Coffy" for a university project in Final Cut Pro. I ripped the movie as a H264 .avi video and can import into into Final Cut but can't make it play properly. When playing it in the viewer there's a white screen and when trying to play it from the timeline both the viewer and the canvas says 'Codec could not be opened". I tried to convert the video to a Quicktime movie file, and after importing it and trying to play it, the viewer is flickering between red and black.

Does anyone know how I can get this god damn video to play properly?:)

I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

Use Mpeg Stream Clip to rip the DVD into a Mov file.
FCP does NOT edit AVI's.
Make sure your Video clip and sequence settings match.

To be precise...rip it to a DV/NTSC or DV50 file. Not just "mov." That's like saying "I'd like a can of drink." What KIND of drink.

The codec is VERY important. FCP only works with a short list. Well, it's a LONG list, but it isn't just any old thing.

I think perhaps flip for mac might help. The convert in mpegstreamclip is a good one.

How large should a DV-PAL QuickTime version of the movie be? The movie's about 1 and a half hours. Cause I have about 15 GB available on the hard drive and I just wanted to try to convert the avi file to a QuickTime video with DV-PAL compression (I'm in the UK) in MPEG Streamclip. The conversion goes on for a while and then it stops, saying there's no more available space.

DV is 25GB/hr I think.

Nope. It's just about half that--12.6GB per hour.

I converted some .avi files to ProRes 422 with MPEG Streamclip. They work fine in FCP. One weird detail: if I load a clip into the viewer, it shows up as a white screen UNTIL I play it. It plays normally. But then, if I pause, it goes back to a white screen. Any idea why this might be?

Google is your friend.

Turn to Google Search at:

Import AVI to Final Cut Pro/FCP X/FCE for Editing with AVI FCP Converter

You can find many ways there.
