Performance of FCP on older Intel Mac

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I run a

2 x 2.66 GHz Duel core intel xeon Mac with 6GB of RAM and FCP 6.02 on 10.4.11 OS X.

I'm finding that the speed and response of FCP is really poor, with HDV for sure, but even some DV projects (SD PAL DV projects/media etc) are running like porridge when a few effects/layers/Colour correction are applied.

It's not my project settings, so I wondered if re-installing the OS and FCP might speed things up. This hasn't been done for about 2 years.

I know Windows computers slow down with the eextra cruft over time. Do Macs too?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Astrid computers do not slow down, but the system yes.
With the normal use the system gets messes up (Permissions, directories, caches, Files Finder Info,..) and a bit of maintenance is necessary to make it run smooth.
Some of the maintenance tasks are done by the very computer just letting it open at night.
Some others, and very important, must be done by you.
You need to "Repair Permissions" regularly and always when you install any piece of software. Do it with the DiskUtility.
Another fundamental task, is to rebuild the Directories. You need an application like DiskWarrior or TechTools to do this. I recommend you DiskWarrior because is the easiest to use.

I have the same system, but have updated to FCP 7 and OSX 10.6. If you can possibly afford to upgrade I highly recommend it (do a fresh install). In the states you can get OSX10.6 for $25 and deals on the FCS upgrade on eBay. I'm very pleased with my system (for now).
