Creating 4k Editing Computer
on Sep 26, 2014 at 9:33:02 pm

I am looking at moving to working in 4k in the near future and have been researching the proper editing computer to accomplish it effectively.

I currently have a late 2013 27inch iMac I believe 3.4ghz Quad Core i5
8GB memory
1TB hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory

For external storage I'm using a 10th Lacie 5big which I think is fast enough.

To move into 4k I'm looking at 3 camera's, but would like to possibly be able to work with Red in the future.

Blackmagic Production Camera 4k (880 Mbps Prores 422 hq)

Panasonic GH4 internal 4k (100 or 200Mbps data rate I think).

Sony A7s via Atomos Shogun (880 Mbps Prores 422 hq) I think it can do uncompressed, not sure about workflow/demands for that.

My research has shown that an 8 core Mac Pro with 6gb of D700 GPU would get the job done, but I'm having trouble answering how much worse a 6 or 4 core Mac Pro would be? I'd even like to know if my present iMac might even be able effectively handle a Prores 422hq 4k workflow?

If I can get by well on the iMac or lesser mac pro that would of course save me money at present.

Any answers on this subject and about creating an effective 4k workflow especially one for Prores would be very appreciated. Thanks!
