Layback HDV to tape using a Sony Z7, tips please?
on Jun 14, 2011 at 11:20:51 am

Is it even possible? I've been helping a charity who help children from immigrant and minority backgrounds make films, both drama and documentary on subjects that affect them (for instance, we've enabled a group of Somalian girls to make a drama about FGM, a very taboo subject not just in their society but in the UK in general).

There is very little money, and one of the three films this time around was shot at 1080i 25fps on a Sony Z7. Ideally we'd like our master copy to be HD too, but hiring an HDCAM deck will cost money that we just don't have.

The charity owns the Z7 that the film was shot on, so I wonder if there is a way to record back to tape on it? If so then we can live without the film starting at 10:00:00:00!

Any advice would be appreciated, and please bear in mind this is for a charity, although professionals we're also all volunteers and there is really no money for us to do this. I enjoy giving my time up to help, but I'd rather keep my wallet out of it if possible!

FireWire cable. The same cable that you use to capture from Z7.
Connect the camera, open the project, make sure that the camera is recognized by FCP. Then open the sequence and use print to tape.

Note, this will output the sequence to the camera, and tape, but not with the start time of 10:00:00:00. FOr that you need professional decks and capture cards.

That's what I was expecting, but if it means saving £100+ then it's fine for us. It's only a hard back up, not for broadcast or anything, although the HDCAM tape may be used for the showing at the local arts cinema that's holding the 'premiere'! :o)
