Please settle a debate for me - FCP window arrangements affect performance?

I like to have our 2 screen edit systems set up in the Avid format - Files effects etc on the left monitor, and timeline, viewer, and canvas on the right monitor. I've worked like this for 6 years starting with a G5 and now on two mac pros. This editor is telling me that the video card is left monitor dominant and that having video elements on the right causes the mac to be sluggish and not edit as well as having the timeline on the left monitor. I think this is ridiculous - it's an Octo core mac with a video card recommended at the time of purchase (the mac is 2 years old) by some of the forum leaders here.

This is stupid, right? Macs don't play video better on one window vs another, right? It's frikken 2011 already - Avid's been doing this for years as the default setup...but maybe that explains my experiences with avid....

Though I tend to lean more towards the left politically, Macs are purely centrist, with no leanings right or left. At least that's been my experience. And, I have worked with editors of all persuasions, some of whom set things up bassackwards like you, who never seemed to have any issues.

It all depends on if you like the toilet paper over the top, or from underneath. Liberals like it underneath. Which is totally illogical.

No difference whatsoever how you have your Windows set up for FCP performance. Heck, I have 20 different window setups on my machine which I switch between depending on the task I'm doing.

Tell your editor to simply swap the monitor cables. This will effectively swap the position of the monitors. When he decides that the performance is improved, you can tell him about the placebo effect.

I echo that.
Walter...nice layouts!! that gave me some great ideas. I have dual monitors...so I get spoiled and I work much the same way as John...bins on the left screen and timeline and source/record on the right (probably from my AVID Meridien days) Time to save me some layout files!

[Don Walker] "but with FCP X you will only need one monitor......"

In fact, with FCPX new X-Files technology you can utilize the new ThunderBolt inter-ocular adapter, connecting directly to the pre-frontal cortex, thus bypassing the monitor(s) all together.

The single connector adapter is available immediately, with the dual 3D inter-ocular adapter due for release in quarter-4 of 2011.

[Don Walker] "Does that also mean I can edit by thought now?"

The "edit by thought" features of X-Files technology will initially be available only to experienced filmmakers with more than 20-years in the business. Newbies, neophytes, and younger editors will have to qualify over a period of several years before receiving access to that option. It's Apple's way of paying back those who've suffered most due to FCP's removal of all barriers to entry into the business.

Now then, David. You're still under the NDA.
