best program for Ken Burns effect and text panning?
on Mar 14, 2011 at 9:23:27 pm

What is the best program for the panning and zooming you see in the Ken Burns documentaries? I have text and pictures to pan and zoom in/out on. I know how to do it in Final Cut Pro. I was wondering if there is another program that does it much better ? Any pointers? What's the best way to go about doing this?

Also, when I drag the image left or right I always go up or down a little. Is there a way to make sure I'm going straight across without ultra precise mouse dragging (which is close to impossible)?

Thanks so much in advance, I appreciate any kind of response.

Zeke

I'd use After Effects. You could probably do it in Motion too, but I've never used it for that.

Ok but is there a reason I'd want to use After Effects or Motion over doing it in Final Cut Pro? I haven't really seen the end result of the ones I've experimented with in FCP so I don't know how they're going to look, but I'm curious to know if I should be using another program instead and why.

FCP doesn't ease into the movement, or out of the movement smoothly at all. Jerky start and stop. Very bad. I use it when I don't start a move, or settle on a pic. Otherwise, I use After Effects or Motion...much smoother when settling.

You can get a free plug in from Noise Industry.

We bought a plug-in called Moving Picture, which can run stand-alone on another computer while you keep working on an edit with your NLE, or just work within your NLE as a plug-in.

YOu can do it in FCP (tutorial): Movement on Stills

You can do it in Motion (tutorial): http://www.rippletraining.com/movies/Free%20Downloads/motion_kburns_redux_9...

Folks,

I am a bit biased, but use the free Pan & Zoom plugin from Noise Industries. Keeps it all within FCP and is very easy to use with a setup mode. The guys should really charge for this one as it has some cool features like quadratic in/out acceleration.

But to get it really nice, you need a few layers.
So cut out parts to a new layer, blow up a bit and/or restore the bg.
(Photoshop work probably)
Then go to AE or Maya.

Nice example here:

(I assume this was a week of work at least, see the specs on the final delivery...)

I use PhotoMotion http://www.geethree.com/slickfx/photomotion/
It accepts almost any still format, is easy and quick.

AE affords the most control but I've also used the Pan Zoom Pro FCP plugin in the past, which is relatively quick and easy.

I'll risk a flame here, but I really like iMovie for this - it's a built in effect and it's so easy to use there. Then just export the footage and bring into FCP. I've made wedding videos and the like in iMovie many times - it's drag n drop. I'm using iMovie 7.x (iMovie '08?).

Do you get a lot of control with I Movie as to where it starts and stops and how long...?

[zeke meginsky] "Is there a way to make sure I'm going straight across without ultra precise mouse dragging (which is close to impossible)?"

Holding down the shift key will lock you down horizontally or vertically depending which way you are dragging with your mouse.

Thanks, I'll try that shift key thing.

I'm going to try to use Motion tonight. Is there something I should be doing with the images first before I do it? I read somewhere that I should convert them to .tiff, not .jpeg. Should they be certain dimensions (resolution) and is there a way to make them certain dimensions?? Thanks so much for anyone who responds to these questions..

I'm about to use Motion to do some Ken Burns effect styling. Any advice, Zeke? For that matter, in a question for everyone else, is using Motion any better than using FCP with the Noise Industries Pan and Zoom free plug-in?

This is probably a bit late, but I have used most of the options FCP, avid pan and scan, motion and AE and the best bit of software out there for this is Digirostrum from cleverplugs. it costs a bit £300 or so but it offers so much more than in out up down left and right. It is also pretty easy to use and out puts most formats. I often work with massive stills and have problems with fcp and avid crashing and motion scales them to only 4000 pixels wide.

good luck
