Text Options/ Problems in FCP
on Sep 18, 2010 at 1:19:14 am

I've had this problem a few times and wondered if anyone had some troubleshooting options. I'm placing text in the timeline set at HD 1440x1080. When playing (on various monitors) the text is almost pixelated looking like it wasn't deinterlaced.

This has occurred on various projects with various presets. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Mark

I'm guessing that your 1440x1080 footage is interlaced HDV, yeah?

Are you creating your text in FCP using the text tool (which creates interlaced text), or are you creating progressive-scan titles in another app? More information about your workflow may be revealing.

Thanks for the response. I've tried both. The initial text came from photoshop. I've since recreated it in FCP and unfortunately there are no major differences. And the HDV is interlaced.

Any ideas?

When you say you're playing the footage on various monitors, what is the method? (Is it playing through an AJA/Kona/Matrox style box, is it playing full-screen on your monitor, or are you burning to DVD and playing it on a TV?)

I'm burning to DVD and playing on a monitor. The export settings are 1440x1080 QT.

You're exporting to 1440x1080, but then how are you encoding it to 720x480 MPEG-2 for DVD? Are you using Compressor's presets? Something else?

Actually, I haven't been using compressor. I've just been exporting it, and doing a quick onestep with iDVD so I can check it on various monitors. Do you suggest taking another step in the export process?

Man, I don't even know what iDVD does with HD footage. It might be worth it to use Compressor's "Best Quality DVD" preset and see if it does the same thing, just to rule that out.

When you open the exported 1440x1080 file in QuickTime Player, does the text display correctly?

The place I'd look next is in the project sequence settings, though I suspect that posting a link to a short portion of the clip would be most helpful. Looking at the clip may tell a lot.

The QT player shows it to have the same issues. I'll try re-exporting it via compressor. Hopefully, something will be cleared up or answered with that.

Thanks for your help, Garrett. Hopefully, this will be the solution. If not, I'll put a video post up.

If the problem shows up with the exported file before you bring it into iDVD, my guess is that Compressor won't solve it. See if you can post a link to the video and maybe that will show us some clues.
