Convert .MOV to .WMV
on Sep 10, 2010 at 11:16:11 am

Hi

I have to convert a .mov to a .wmv. Please advise me of the best software to do this. The ones I have been trying have the following problems:

Flip4mac-Any graphics/text on the movie come out looking really poor quality (pixelated).
Visual Hub- Puts a black crop line down the side and sometimes comes out with random glitches.

Current movies are H.264 438x266
WMVs must be below 30mb

Thanks

Ceri

I wouldn't blame the applications you are using, but the clip you are working with.
Aside of being a compressed format, the dimensions (438 x 266) doesn't match any standard geometry (no 4 x3, nor 16 x9), neither allow a proper macroblocks pattern.

ok thanks. I can start with the full quality videos that would be HDV1080i, 1920x1080 and compress to WMV from there. However the movie size, though it random, has been requested by a client and I can't change it.
But I'd still like to know what software to use for the conversion to get the best results

[Ceri Allen] "owever the movie size, though it random, has been requested by a client and I can't change it."
So tell your client that you won't be able to do a proper compression with that size and that the clip will look distorted.

The best choice is Episode. It's not the cheapest though...

MPEG Streamclip does a good job with wmv compressions. It will allow you to customize your dimensions. But you may have to crop your image so you don't distort it.

Rafael, it does. I use it all the time for wmv conversion. You just need Flip4Mac w/ WMV installed, then Export to Other Formats. I believe Ceri already has Flip4Mac, so it should work.

Like that , OK, but MPGStreamclip is just an interface for Flip4Mac

I have used Compressor with good results. Its just hard to find the preset and I am not in front of my editing computer now.

Right, that's what I mean. MPEG Streamclip allows Export to Other Formats (w/ Flip4Mac installed this means wmv becomes an export option).

Amongst its many talents, MPEG Streamclip exposes all the settings that QT Pro has, it just puts them right in front of your face so they're really easy to see.

I use it for batch converting anything (with Perian's help) to WMVs every day. In my dock I have Finder, FCP, then MPEG Streamclip.

For WMVs, I find the preset "Presentation, High" to give good results with not much pain. As others have pointed out, that odd size may cause problems.

I use the program MelodyCan. It's free, there's no malware or advertising, and it's pretty darn easy to use. It will convert literally everything out there.

Nice video....
Personally, i use AppGeeker to convert .mov to .wmv.
It's a nice little program that can convert back and forth from most formats. We have used it quite a bit to render from mov into wmv format.

I think that guy has passed this issue. lol...

Have you tried Faasoft Video Converter? This software can easily convert mov file to wmv and edit the converted file as you need. Here is the link for convenience:http://faasoft.com/video-converter.html
