ProRes missing from FCP6
on Feb 17, 2010 at 8:23:56 pm

hi

i just installed FCP6 on my new macbook pro and the ProRes codec is missing. i can't setup a sequence with it or edit existing projects that use ProRes.

does anyone know why it wouldn't have installed the codec or know where i can get it from if its just a case of putting it in a folder? i've re-installed FCP6 3 times now and it still doesn't show up.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

cheers

[Steven Monk] "i just installed FCP6 on my new macbook pro and the ProRes codec is missing. i can't setup a sequence with it or edit existing projects that use ProRes. "

FCP 6 only supports 2 of the versions found in FCP 7 - ProRes and ProRes HQ.
so no if that means you are trying to work in Proxy, LT or 4444 the other versions of the PR codec- it will not work.

Steven -

I don't believe that the Pro Res Codec is part of the original FCP6 Install. Run a clean install (sounds like you've done that) and then run system updates to bring yourself up to date. I can't remember how I ended up with Prores on my old system, but I do remember it wasn't part of the original install.

Cheers,

thanks for the replies.

gary - i've never had FCP7 on this machine so i don;t understand what you are saying, sorry.

Stace - i did a clean uninstall, i used FCP remover, and ran all updates but its still not there.

it seems no one has ever had this problem as i have googled it over and over but never found a similar problem.

[Steven Monk] "gary - i've never had FCP7 on this machine so i don;t understand what you are saying, sorry. "

there are 3 additional versions of the ProRes codec in FCS3 that did not come with FC Studio2 and you stated "i can't setup a sequence with it or edit existing projects that use ProRes. " so I assumed that you might have been working with one of the new codecs that are not available in FCS2

To correct the other poster- the ProRes codec was introduced with FCS2 which contained Final Cut Pro v6

Try something else- can you see a ProRes file created on another computer- or does the QT frame show all white?

My guess is you are looking for something that may not be a default. What are you trying to do and what camera and frame rate are you attempting to capture from.

i tried a file created on another computer that is encoded with ProRes and i can view it perfectly.

I took a couple of screen-grabs to show what FCP6 says when trying to create a sequence using ProRes as the codec, and to show that there is no codec in the list.

the other projects i have tried to open and use were created on FCP 6.06 and i have updated my FCP to the same version.

I did another clean install today and it's still missing. I can't believe i am the only person to ever have this problem. started to get a bit annoyed now, haha,

Hi, I managed to fix it in the end by opening the final cut install pkg with pacifist and finding just the pro-res codec install file in there. Cheers.

Such a quick response!
I did what you suggested and everything is fine now, thanks a lot!
2 more tips, if someone bumps here with the same problem:
after installing
• verify file permissions: right click the ProRes package (within Pacifist) and click "Verify". If some file permissions are not matching, change them as suggested using terminal.
To do it, change directory: cd /Library/QuickTime then sudo chmod <permission codes> <filename> eg: sudo chmod 775 AppleProres422.component
• reboot
