1080i Project - ProRes or Uncompressed?
on May 19, 2009 at 1:30:09 pm

I am starting a 1920x1080 project which will be graphics only. The files originate in PS and AE.
the end result will be a Blu Ray disc.
In FCP should I work in 1080 10-bit Uncompressed or Apple ProRes 422.
We have a Kona LHe that we use to monitor on an HD monitor so I will use the Kona codec.
thanks

Personally, I'd use ProRes HQ 10 bit. will look the same as uncompressed, and the file size will be about 1/6th the size of Uncompressed HD.

Yes, I think I will go with the ProRes HQ and see how it works. We often use ProRes for video, but given it is a graphics job, and will play Blu Ray I was wondering if there is any benefit to the Uncompressed setting for sharpness.

Probably no visual difference at all... both are 10 bit video. I actually don't know of a lot of folks editing uncompressed HD any more in FCP. ProRes pretty much killed it.

Apart from file size, there is a big difference in demand on hard drive and data rate for uncompressed. I used to use uncompressed HD with a fibre channel RAID. Now I am just using ProRes.

I am just finishing up P2 project in AVCINTRA 100. I have so much compression artefacts from the rushes after grading in Color & Filmlight that Pro Res only made it worse, so we kept with 1:1. It was a slight difference but on a big screen it helps.
