nattress standards conversion question
on Apr 22, 2009 at 3:18:34 pm

Is there any more merit to converting from 24p to 25p rather than 25p to 24p? Or vice versa? In other words, if one has to distribute in PAL and NTSC, which is the better one to start with for progressive frame shooting, and then ultimately SD DVD delivery?

When you go from 25 to 24 you need to discharge information.
When you go from 24 to 25 you need to create new picture.
In theory should be easier to discharge than too create.
In both cases the process is long and affects the quality of the image.
I don't see much advantage shooting in any of both formats to finish in both at the same time.
Any way I would post Graeme Nattress and I would ask him.

I use Episode Pro for standards conversion, seems to be the best quality.

Have a wonderful day.

Starting with PAL is advantageous as no pulldown to remove, and slightly higher resolution. If you convert it to 24p by slowing it down 4% (use Cinema Tools "conform") Image looks great. You can make a 24p DVD. If you need to keep the speed constant, my Conversion plug will do 25p to 60i, which looks nice too.

Thanks, Graeme.
If I'm starting with HDV video, and outputting SD DVD, is the advantage of starting with 25p still stand?
I'm really new at this standards conversion stuff. Thanks for your help.

Graeme, I just found your article online on the subject of 24p in FCP and found it immensely educational. I obviously have a lot to learn, but this is a great place to start. Thanks.
