From 720p to 4:3 letterbox on miniDV... using HVX as deck
on Apr 1, 2009 at 8:25:42 am

Hi all,

I've poked around previous threads, hoping my issue would be common. But there are a few factors at play on what I'm trying to do so I couldn't find a thorough answer. Here it is...

1) I'm working on a project that I shot and edited all @ 720P/24P (on FCP 6).
2) I need to print this to miniDV and it needs to be NTSC 4:3 letterbox.

I'm sure I could take this to a post house and pay to have it done, but I'd like to do it with the equipment I have.

I have a MacBookPro (aka no fancy cards), FCP 6, and an HVX200 camera. Can I arrange things to print to video from my laptop, using the HVX as a deck?

Any help on this one appreciated greatly.

I would recommend first exporting your 720p sequence to QuickTime with "current settings". Then, make a new 4:3 DV sequence (making sure your frame rate is the same as your source), import the 720p Quicktime file, drop it into your DV sequence and make sure FCP does not conform the sequence to fit the clip.

You may have to scale the 720p clip down to fit in the DV frame and you'll probably want to enable 2:3:2:3 pulldown on that sequence (which can be found in the RT tab in the upper left corner of the sequence window, if you've made your sequence 24fps). Then just render and print to tape.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Samuel. Your suggestion worked. Now I'm just left (well, after a lengthy render) with printing to tape.

I've tested this using my HVX. I can get FCP to recognize the camera... that is, I can get to the point where I can view the FCP timeline on the LCD. But, when I try to print to video I'm not able to start recording on the tape. One would think that I've set things up such that I can select the "automatically start recording" option, but that is grayed out. There must be a way to do this... probably something very simple.

Of course I can always find another place to print to tape (I've done as much with cheap generic consumer cams in the past), but would love to know how to do this with the HVX.
