smoothcam files from analysed to unanalysed
on Mar 15, 2009 at 10:01:56 pm

Help. This is my first time really using Smoothcam filter in FCP6 and I completed analysis on a number of shorter test clips and experimented with the settings without problem. I then set the larger clips to be analyzed and few were done well and again I changed the settings of the clips that have been completed. I was very surprised when I returned to find out that some of the master clips that were listed in the Browser's "Smoothcam" column as completed have now returned to "unanalyzed" as if nothing has been done. Some of the clips had been put into sequences and cut into sub clips while the rest were still whole master clips. I queued one of the "unanalyzed" clips again for smoothcam. I'm afraid that some of the other completed master clips (as well as the ones still being analysed from the initial batch) will change. These master clips take so long and I'm afraid of wasting a lot of time. Any idea what is happening? I checked the finder and the .mtdf files are still there.

It may be a bug, as I too have encountered this issue, and I have no fix. Anyone got a solution?

The smoothcam bug I've seen is that the analyzed clips become un-rendered after the initial render. I've not heard of a smoothcam clip becoming un-analyzed before. The work around would still be the same though: render your smoothcam clips and export them as self-contained .mov files then import those back into your project.

[Don Greening] "The smoothcam bug I've seen is that the analyzed clips become un-rendered after the initial render. "

Yes, Don has that exactly right. That's what I really meant to say.

I've also heard (from an Apple Motion Pro trainer) that its better to use the Stabilize behavior in Motion than the Smooth Cam filter in FCP. Not exactly sure why or if there's even a quality difference...

I'm having the same problem. Both with lost smoothcam renders and the clips appearing unanalyzed. I'm exporting as self-contained QT and import back into FCP now as previously suggested.
