Are my crashes, kernel failures and restarts a coincidence?
on Nov 11, 2013 at 2:45:51 pm

The other day I got some footage from a friend's fairly new consumer Sony camera, I logged and transferred the footage as well as imported a couple of converted .movs.

Amongst other things the footage was out of sync, but worse than that I started getting the old grey veil of death down my screen, indicating a kernel failure. Along with that it would just restart out of the blue or just plain freeze; the restarts were the most frequent, followed by the kernel fails and then the freezes.

My solution (which wasn't really a solution at all) was to get rid of all traces of that footage on the machine, including auto saves and render files.

So my problem is, it's still happening, I've tried disconnecting drives and even my 2nd screen; I've verified and repaired my second internal, I've verified my boot, but it won't allow me to repair even after I verify repair permissions.

Is this the end of my Mac's life or can anyone out there give me a glimmer of hope?

hello...

what are the kernel failures saying? is there anything interesting in the log? you can learn about that log here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742

unless there is a new virus of sorts that is embedded in .mov files that attacks os x (unlikely, but certainly of course possible), then i don't think it was the footage. those logs are a good place to start to see at least what it is...

What is your OS version? And what NLE and version number, I'm guessing FCP 7? FCP 7.0.3? What camera model and what video and audio format does it record?

Obviously this is not normal behavior, but I doubt your Mac has reached end of life.

Sounds similar to an issue I had. This is indicative of hardware failure. Most likely a video card or bad RAM. In my case it boiled down to a bad back plane board. Take it to the local Apple Store and have them troubleshoot it.
