Character map like in Windows?

I've been using Macs for a few years now, but still haven't been able to find this.

Is there a character map which is the equivalent of the one in Windows?

By this, I mean a list of all fonts which

a) shows all the characters in the font
b) either allows you to copy & paste or gives you the key-code for the character

I know Font Book lists the fonts in your system, but it only shows you the basic characters, and it does not allow you to copy and paste.

The Special Characters box shows you special characters, and sometimes allows you to enter the character into your app (if the app allows it).

Is there something that synthesizes the two, like the very easy to use Windows Character Map? (BTW, I thought Macs were supposed to be better at this stuff.)

Thanks!

Naveen

System Preference> Language and Text> Input sources.

Check the Keyboard and character viewer and check the "Show input menu in menu bar"
