Heat or Video card related crash? Intel Mac Pro
on Sep 21, 2011 at 10:09:12 pm

Hello,

I have had a few issues with the Mac Pro tower I use at work.
I was wondering if it could be a heat issue? Video card issue?

First of all, I was operating on my Mac Pro Tower video editing for about 6 hours and then all of a sudden the monitors went blue and the cpu automatically restarted itself.

The day before this issue happened the system was showing visual artifacts on the monitors: white vertical lines while audio mixing within Final Cut. Those artifacts appeared 2-3 times within a 15-20 mins period.

Below are the specs of the cpu:

OS X version 10.5.8
Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors
4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM ram
ATI Radeon X1900 XT: total VRAM 512 MB

After the crash all of the drives are above 100 degrees F, with two drives over 106 degrees F.

Apple's online specs say the following for operating and storage temps:

Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
Storage temperature: -40° to 116° F (-40° to 47° C)

What is the difference between the operating and storage temps?

Thanks for reading about my cpu issues. Help, please...

Best,

What's with the fans? If temperature reaches threshold they'll blast at full speed. If that's your case you need to vacuum clean inside the chassis. Otherwise look for software related issues. BTW, storage temperature is the one for mac turned off. If it's on, refer to operating temperature. In either case these numbers are pessimistic assessment. You still have safe room to go in both directions.

Hello,

The fans were acting normal just before the system restarted itself.
I will be keeping my eyes open to any minor issues on the computer through the next few days to see if it shows any other warning signs.

Thanks for your quick response!

Best,

It's the video card.

I had this issue, it's a known issue actually, with the X1900 XT. I ended up buying a new on off Amazon, and it fixed the crashing.

I think Apple even issued some form of recall, or replacement program for that card. I was unaware of it until after I had already purchased a new card.

Give Apple a call, they may replace it for free.
