mirroring iTunes Library as a music/sound archive

Hi,

I'm currently working in a postproduction company for a German News Television station. We have recently changed to Final Cut.

We'd like to us iTunes for our music archive and this is where the problem starts:

Basically we'd like to be able to have a shared library folder for all of our 5 editing suites from which we can work at the same time. The folder would of course be on a network drive. This is important, as we'd like to have the same library accessible to everyone and being updated instantly whenever someone adds music to it.

Why we can’t just use the ‘shared music’ – option: We need to be able to feed the Information with tags manually that aren’t provided automatically by iTunes and we would like to have ONE library rather then 5 different ones. Plus only one of the editing suites is connected to the Internet, which is necessary for automatically downloading ID3-Tags.

We were thinking about external FireWire Harddrives which are synced every other week, which then is of course more work and we'd have to tell iTunes every time that new music has been added to the library folder.

It would be fantastic if anyone knows a way how to make this happen, a way to work around it or any another feasible solution.

Bye,

Sandro

Itunes has an 'automatically add to library' folder that can have items dragged into and automatically imported into the iTunes library.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3832

We use a NAS 2tb RAID 1 Synology 2 drive server (2 x 2tb drives, 1 operating as a RAID backup of the other). It has an iTunes server built in. If you connect via gigabit ethernet to all systems, you'll basically have a mounted drive on all edit systems. All systems can mount the server via finder and drag files directly into this 'add to library' folder on the server, and iTunes will scan it when it's open and import it.

1 caveat - iTunes won't let multiple users open iTunes simultaneously. One system at a time can open it. But you probably are aware of that.

Does that help at all?

Hi John,

thanks for the quick response. Your solution seems interesting.

However: do the different machines share the library on the iTunes server or do you just work around that problem by having iTunes running on one machine at a time? I'm a bit confused here.

OR is it the case that the iTunesServer would copy from the 'AddToiTunes'-Folder to every single local library of the different machines?
Hence: Whenever an editor would come with new music, they would drag it to that folder and this would multiply it to the different individual iTunesLibraries? This, Sir, would be freaking awesome!

Bye,

Sandro

all the computers would share one library and all be updated. Are you just looking to sync 3 libraries up? In our office, we just update a single machine and then every few months replace the other libraries. Then NAS at home is what we use with our laptops and iTunes server, mostly.

I feel like iTunes needs to stop forcing these workarounds. You may be able to use spotify to do what you're looking to do.

Hey John,

basically it's 5 libraries that we're looking to sync automatically, preferably without us having to update anything manually from now and again.

Spotify isn't helpful, as we need the actual data on the computer and would the ability to add further information to the ID3-Tag. We would like to use it as a sound archive, hence we need fast access to the files to use them in the programme as it is for news edititing.

Do you reckon it is possible to have one central 'add to itunes library folder' on a server, which then would distribute the data to the 5 individual libraries? Maybe some automator pinch?

In our case we cannot just update one machine to sync the others every other week, as there is an input on all machines constantly.

Thank you for your time so far John.

Bye,

Sandro
