I have a mac pro:
2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
8GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Mac OS X leopard

it work fine when I m doin 1920x1080 editing in Final Cut Pro, because I converted the original 4k video to 1080 for editing, now editing finished, boss want to add some effect and remove little thing in the scene using After effect. so there is no escape have to work on the 4k original footage. I hvnt started yet, but have to ask is the after effect can work on that? I m using AE cs4.

base on the thing I mention above, this is the question I want to know:
1.is my current hardware & software strong enough to get the work done?

2. if my hardware not strong enough, what can I upgrade from it?

3. if I want to get new mac pro for future 4k video editing & visual effect use, what kind of spec should I have?

hope can hear some recommendation here, thanks

I don't think that the Mac Pro is going to be the weakest link, most likely you will run into bandwidth issues getting the data from the hard disk to your computer. Where do you have the footage stored? Internally/externally - Firewire 800, eSata etc.?

Firewire 800 is a good start but that's only the data pipe. What's pushing the data? A raid, simple 7200rpm disk? You could always use the AJA System Test to get an idea of wether or not you'll be able to get enough data throughput ... Another way: Just try it!

Get it here: http://www.aja.com/products/software/

Good luck!

to work with 4k video native you need the strongest devices.
At least a 8 core Mac Pro with min. 12Gb Ram.
You need a very strong breakout card (biggest Aja/Blackmagic) You need a HD Monitor for Monitoring and at least a good SAS Raid or 4x Fibrechannel raid. (more than 400 MB/s)
Hot stuff.

Good luck
