cannot delete?????????

Hello,
Here is the issue... The file is a "HD MPEG-2 18.0Mbps.m2v". When try to empty the trash i get this prompt....
The operation can’t be completed because
the item“test1-HD MPEG-2 18.0Mbps.m2v” is in use.

Brand new mac pro 2X2.26GHz 8 core with 12GB RAM using newest version of OS X, 10.6.2

I have closed all applications running on the computer and still will not delete.
I created this file using compressor after making my original .mov file in Final Cut Pro. I also used apple's qmaster to create a quick cluster for the computer and had it running while compressing this file.

Does anybody know what might be going on here?

thanks
joe

Not sure the reason but try holding down the option key while emptying the trash. That usually will dump anything.

Only other thing I can think of is to do a Secure Empty Trash...if you haven't already.

Go up to Finder. There should be an option under Empty Trash that says Secure Empty Trash. It takes longer but it's more thorough.

Thanks,
I am trying it now. How long is suppose to take? I have waited 5 minutes now and the empty trash icon appears to be continuing to empty trash but not making any progress. The blue bar is stagnant around 1/3 of the full bar, but still appears to emptying trash.

It's a very lengthy process. It's essentially wiping that data completely clean off your drive, as opposed to leaving traceable pieces of it that can be recovered, which is what regular empty trash does. Will be worth it if it solves the problem. Hopefully it'll do the trick.

Joe:

There are a number of reasons that this can happen. Usually, it is easily resolved by techniques such as those described above.

Recently, I had the problem and finally gave up. Then, I found Trash It at the following URL:

http://www.nonamescriptware.com/

It's free. However, after using it I had no problem making a donation to the creator.

With it saying the file is in use try restarting the computer that should sever any background process from attempting to access the file.

If that does not work boot into safe mode and empty the trash.
