Universal software on PowerBook G4 and PowerMac G5

Hello All

I have A 15inch PowerBook G4 running OS 10.4.8 my 1.8Ghz G5 Desktop is also running the same OS

just wondering if I can purchase universal installs of applications like Shake or do I need to specify that I have an older mac when I make my purchase

Nope, that's what "Universal" means. PowerPC and Intel. You don't have worry. At the moment it's only Intel folks that have to make sure they're getting Universal software. You can use Universal or non-universal.

Hi,
Universal Binary means that the application is running "natively" on the new Intel powered processors like MacBookPro etc.
If you run an Application that is not (yet) universal binary, on an Intel Mac, it will still run but not natively; it'll run in Rosetta, meaning it will be slower because the code is converted to Rosetta. As far as I know, once the application is released as Universal binary, you cannot purchase PPC native applications of that same application anymore , because
Universal binary can still run on "non Intel" PPC macs.
