I run a professional motion graphics and animation studio and have recently had an HD die on me (bad sector).
It has been used hardcore for about 2 years.
Is this the expected lifespan?

That all depends on your HD how well was it built... there a lot of factors that go into how long the drive will last, I have had media drives die in a year or last for 10 it depends on the drive...

The HD was the stock standard one that ships with the Dual G5 PPC.
I think for Asia Pacific the Macs are shipped out of Singapore...

The SATA drives that were typically shipping in Power Macs are Maxtors with a one year warranty. I think they have a mean time between failures of about 350,000 to 500,000 hours. Meaning, on average they last several years, but any single drive could fail at any time.
