IATSE Contract Negotiations
on Jul 22, 2018 at 9:06:24 pm

Local IATSE brothers and sisters, by now you may have heard that Local 700 (the editor's guild) organized an informational meeting yesterday to update membership on the status of ongoing contract negotiations. Over 2000 members convened at the Universal Sheraton and received a very eye-opening presentation about how our health and welfare and pensions are funded.

Long story short: the traditional residual streams are declining and more and more of us are working on "new media", which currently do not contribute to the financial wellness of our plans. We were made to understand how ABSOLUTELY IMPERATIVE it is to us that we negotiate a share of this new business model, just as the WGA, DGA and SAG have. If we do not (and, frankly, even if we do) our plans are in danger.

Make no mistake: This is an EXISTENTIAL THREAT to our future wellbeing.

There are accusations out there that Local 700 is somehow trying to divide IATSE, but nothing is further from the truth. Our leadership is trying desperately to make all of IATSE membership aware of just how dire this negotiation is.

Studios are basically shrugging their shoulders, because IATSE has not struck in its 125 year history. They therefore think we will not strike now and are not motivated to meet our demands.

Brothers and Sisters: make no mistake! If we WERE to strike, the studios would HAVE TO MEET OUR DEMANDS! If cameras do not roll and footage doesn't get cut, the studios are SHUT DOWN.

We have more power than even the actors. Literally NOTHING HAPPENS! We must stand strong on these negotiations.

Let your leadership know you demand a share of new media for the sake of our collective futures. Ask questions and make sure they're giving you the full answer. We simply cannot flop on this. It's now or never, seriously.

Local 700 leadership has done a tremendous job of informing us of just how tenuous our financial position is and how important this negotiation is.

Ask questions! Stand strong! Demand action!
