Indoor Time-lapse question(s)

Not sure if this is the proper forum (Cinematrography vs photography).

I'm really a video person venturing into using a DSLR for time lapse.
Tried doing a 4-day long time lapse of a seed growing (indoors in a jar).
The lighting changes from day to night were really extreme, even though I used aperture priority and let it be open for a number of seconds at night.

So I was considering doing all-lighting and blacking out the windows to get consistent exposure, and here are the options I thought of.

I have a RIFA Tungsten softlight. I can get the Fluorescent attachment and lamps for around $200.
(And maybe use a couple bounce cards to get some fill light).

Does anyone know if it's unsafe, heat-wise, to leave those on for 3-4 days in a row. I would be home some of the time, but not necessarily all the time. I've not yet ventured into the whole strobe arena, and hope to not go there because it's another whole ball of wax, and I'm mostly a video person.

Thoughts from anyone??

Many thanks!!
