Relinking Linked Media that was moved from one drive to another
on Dec 13, 2019 at 10:07:51 am

Hello,

I have some media that was moved from one drive to another and I've tried just about every setting in the (Venus has to align with Saturn in order for something to) Relink window...but the Relink window just doesn't want to relink.

Can anybody shine a light, please.

Thank you!

Is this AMA Linked Media or Avid MXF Media.

"MY MEDIA/PROJECT MOTTO: If you think three copies of your Media or Projects are enough. Take a moment to place a value on them and then maybe add two more. Hard Drives are now stupidly cheap. A RE-SHOOT AND YOUR TIME AREN'T."

Hi Brent,

It is AMA. It's happening with some sound effects that I had to move to another folder. I did a test with the ProRes Proxies and same problem, it is impossible to relink if they are moved to another folder.

Relinking can be a challenge.

It would be really really nuceifAvid would allow us to select a range of shots and say" here is the new path"...but that just isn't the case.

Relinking to files used to do this ...kind of...you could select 1 file. Repoint it, and Avid would reconnect files in the same path, but that option only works with certain types of media, an I honestly don't think I've seen it not "greyed out" for a long time.

My recommendation is usually to just create a new bin and do fresh links in that bin. Avid will usually see those links and connect your media on the timeline.

If not, then you can look at the Reconnect o selected clips in open bins" method

Wow, that is a big downer that it can't do something that important and basic that every other NLE has been able to do for years now. I remember FCP 7 was able to do that way back in the day (and if I remember correctly FCP 5 and 6 as well).

I'm trying to give Avid a chance and there are many things I like about it, but also a lot of work arounds and specific tasks that should be more straight forward and are handled better in Premiere. If only we could take the best features out of them and bundle it into one. We can call it Previd ☺

Thank you for the tip, hope it works because otherwise this will be a deal breaker for me. I need to be able to move things to a new folder if the situation arises and a 2019 NLE should be able to allow for that to happen.

As stated previously, Avids relink tool is very hit or miss. You could always consolidate your AMA clips to the new file location before moving the source files to their new home which will keep the media in its native codec but will rewrap it as an OMF or MXF respectively.

This will also help with playback in some cases but you can only consolidate AMA clips if they’re natively supported.

Just adding another option for you incase it helps.

This is def a hit and miss tool in Avid.
I have to lug a sequence across numerous bins (shot day/cam letter) and do a link to selected in order to get RED files to work.
However, audio has always been a mystery to me.
At times I would just re AMA the same lot from a different drive, place in a bin, then just move/copy a sequence into the same bin and select all and use "selected" option.
Works most of the time with audio but not 100% like RED files.
Try doing that with audio from a 32-day shoot :P
Tedious having to go to each folder to do the selection steps.

Thank you for the suggestion, Drew! It looks like a great alternative workaround. Definitely better than the workaround I had to do with the deadline breathing down my neck which was to export and AAF and finish it in Premiere, which Relinking tool is an absolute delight to work with in general and specially when compared to Avid's. It just works like a Relinking tool should.

When a professional application's users use words such as "hit or miss" to define such an important aspect of our work, it begs the question of why an industry standard professional tool like Avid is so far behind and gives its users so many headaches in this aspect of our work.

I love many aspects of MC and have come to prefer it over Premiere, but this is something which makes me think twice about using it on a regular basis when working with proxies because the relinking and conforming process opens a world of unnecessary troubles and workarounds that should've been fixed a long time ago.

If Avid is listening: you should make the Relink window much more user friendly, reliable, and intuitive and less "hit or miss". Or just copy Premiere's.

[Joshua King Ortiz] "When a professional application's users use words such as "hit or miss" to define such an important aspect of our work"

To add, the planets, moons, suns, dogs, and cats would have to be aligned for this to be perfect.
From my experience half the battle is due to what happens on set.
I work on a lot of Indie films and they are all soup to nuts at production.
Timecode, no timecode, scratch audio, no scratch audio, etc...
I've worked with Denecke to Tentacle to nothing so it's really the wild west for me.
Heck, even no audio and not slate :P
