Anomalies When Creating AAFs
on Nov 8, 2019 at 1:44:21 am

Hi Guys,

I'm assisting on a feature. It's my first time exporting AAFs from Media Composer.

Please, can anyone tell me why Avid creates new MXFs and mixdowns in addition to creating the exported AAF file itself? and would I need to forward all of these additional MXFs and mixdowns along with the .aaf file itself when sending the AAF to a sound house in order for them to use it?

Any advice or tutorials links would be greatly appreciated.

You most likely have the option chosen where the AAF references external files, and makes them. You should choose the option to EMBED the audio in the AAF, with handles (1-2 seconds)

Thank you for taking the time to respond Shane.

I had the 'Embedded in AAF' option selected under the Media Destinations section in the settings, and it still did the same thing of creating unnecessary media and bring ing them into Media Composer. Below is an image of the settings I'm using.

You have selected consolidate media.
That requires MC to make new masterclips and associated media to embed in the AAF file.
That is normal.
The tidyest method is to copy you seq to an empty bin.
Do the AAF.
A new sequence is created that's liked to the new consolidated media.
But the AAF has a the media and composition information in it.
So you can delete the contents of that bin and all the associated media as its not needed now.
Many editors don't bother as the space used for consolidated audio is very small.

I'd also add 60 frame handles are very small for an audio AAF.
I'd do at least 100 frames.
But best ask the dubbing mixer.

Thank you very much Pat, that's worked a treat, and my sound mixers are happy ☺

Really appreciate you taking the time to reply, cheers.
