Hello all,

Ive been asked as an assistant editor to change the sound level due to distortion in the sound
The only instruction was make the sound -18
Does anyone know what it means?
I think that the volume should me -18db
Its for television broadcast.

Anyone familiar with such demand?

*it is very abstract... I know

if this is for BROADCAST, they should be hiring an audio mixer, as broadcast delivery has many requirements, not only a stereo mix. They want audio stems of various elements. And it also needs to meet a very strict standard in terms of levels. -12db is I believe the peak level for many networks...but you have to check the spec sheet for what the network you are delivering to requires. It might also show what the deliverables are, and maybe that will convince the production to send out the audio to be professionally mixed.

But with the temp sound mix, the offline edit, the EDITOR really should be paying attention to levels and making sure nothing peaks and distorts.

Lots of Broadcasters now use Loudness as a measure of volume.
It is possible to miss the audio well even outside a dub but you need the skills to know how to read the levels and balance it well.
And it's also possible the audio is distorted at source.

-14 is 0db in avid world but you will always abide by your meters regardless. It's reckless for them to throw this in your lap right now.

I think they mean -18 LUFS

And that is not so hard if that is the only demand.
(Getting commercial now...)

Export a Wave from your sequence, and put it in this:

Set the desired LUFS to -18 and let it do it's thing.

(But, -18 is kinda loud, -24 for US and -23 for Europe is standard.)
