exporting subtitles from Avid
on May 25, 2017 at 12:56:16 am

hello dears!
I am in trouble again. I need to export subtitles from Avid 6.5.2, not for another program, just to give the archive to a client. So, I have to deliver a file with Avid Caption TXT, UTF-8, and TTF letters archive . Synchronized, and with the word "start" for the begining in order to be synch. I tryied the caption export method (through effect mode) and it doesn't work. Any other idea?
Thank you!
Str

So, you have a bunch of SubCap effects?
That should work. If you go into the effect editor, you can export a .txt file (It will be UTF-16 le).
Make sure you set it to export txt, not stl.
Then, the conversion to other formats is easy. If you don't own subtitle software and don't plan to do lots of subs in the future, outsource it. (I do it for a couple of beers.)

Bouke, thank you for your answer, the problem is that avid does not export anything from the subtitles. I go to effect editor / subcap/ caption file/ export caption/ . Then I select avod DS caption file (*txt) , put file name etc./ save /AND nothing happens

Create a new bin, named 'bouke', copy your sequence in that, quit avid.
Then, go to the project folder, zip the file called 'bouke.avb' and send it to me.

No, you did not,
To where did you send what?
Not to my e-mail, nor did you post a link where the file could be downloaded.

These are very basic things. If you cannot do this, do not expect any help.

Ok, got your files, and it works fine on my system. (You should have a .txt file by now.)
So, 'something' is fishy with your Avid... (I have no clue what it is, either your version, or you need a clean install)
From the images I cannot tell you doing anything wrong, it just does not work on your system.

Few other points, your work is a bit messy, contains double spaces, extra empty lines, spelling mistakes.
You should consider cleaning it before sending it out.

Last but not least, for a feature with 900+ titles, you really should look at a dedicated subtitle app.
This is (after you've mastered it) way faster.
(My Subbits being one of them.) Shameless self promotion:

Oh, in 'Box appearance', set it to 'as many rows as needed'.
Then you will get bottom aligned text. (So a single line appears at the bottom, looks better.)

Thank you for your interest Bouke, I 'll keep in mind your notifications, (that was my first editing -I'm a director, usually I just give orders to somebody).
Any way, the good news is that the problem is SOLVED. I am not sure how, but I will put here my guess for the next despaired director. Maybe, the fact that I opened (for the 10th time) the edit caption, and without changing a thing –Noting at all- I closed it again, using the ok command instead of cancel made it work.
As magic it's not my style, is the only explanation I can think.
Now , I'll have a look on your subtitling app!
Thanks a lot!
