Now I remember why I left avid.....
on Jul 17, 2011 at 1:43:53 am

I'm relearning avid so I can expand my client base and I can't for the life of me figure out how to import mxf files with the media tool? It's making me nuts, final cut is sooooo easy (log and transfer), this is lunacy? I basically just copied an old job I worked on, not sure of the camera but it's all mxf files and I can't get the media tool to see them?? I tired AMA and all it does is give me bright yellow clips that I can't read in the bins because of the color?? Somebody help, how do I import mxf files, actually any type of file work flow into avid (and keep timecode, obviously)

thanks!!

Slow down. MXF files from what camera? You don't use the media tool unless you are dealing with Avid media in proper media folders. Camera masters you either import directly, or use AMA. When the clips are YELLOW, that means you have them...they are in your project. But just like FCP, they haven't moved on the desktop level...they are still in the folders you left them in. You can CONSOLIDATE them at that point, making them Avid media (zero quality loss), or use them in that bin. I do agree, though, the color is tough to read. But then I consolidate everything. Get it into Avid project formats, since media management is where Avid shines.

don't know the camera, I just grabbed the raw footage from an old FCP job. They're still in the cam a,b & c folders. In the videos folder they all read .mxf. I have no avid folder structure, these are just loose files that I pulled from a job so I can start messing around in avid.

OK, FCP doesn't do MXF...so you must have used Calibrated, MXF4Mac or Raylight to access these files. Are they in a CONTENTS folder, with 6 other folers, that include VIDEO, AUDIO, CLIPS, PROXY...?

That's P2. Use AMA to access, then consolidate to a media drive.

do they need to be in some sort of folder structure or can I just pull them from where they are on my g-raid?

Well, AMA will access them as they are on the G-Raid. But you will have that yellow background on all of the clips. But if you then CONSOLIDATE them to another drive...the drive you want to store the Avid Media...then they will look normal. Zero quality loss.

Diverging a bit, but that is the great thing about Adobe CS5.5; just import any clip straight into the bin - no AMA and no Log 7 Transfer.

AMA goes straight into a bin. Just get the plugin for the footage type, and boom, there it goes. Same effort as Importing.

So... you left Avid because you never figured out how it works?

That title is pretty lame when the cause of your problem was your own ignorance.

You can always go back to FCP 7. I'm sure Apple support will help you.... oh, wait....

It's amazing how old habits just don't die...AVID's just gonna have to change their name to start getting the respect it's due.
