There are basically two ways as people have layed out before. One hook up a DVD player to your Avid and import as composite. This can be messy and really doesn't look that good. I've had sync issues doing this as well.
The second option is to Demux your DVD. Demuxing takes the VOB files and converts them into a format that the Avid can ingest. I'm lucky, we use Digital Rapids for compression, so I can throw in a DVD, point to the VOB's and convert to a Quicktime with the Avid codec-which looks pretty good.
There are plenty of demuxers out there, so all you need to do is find one---and if you have the Avid QT codec all the better(worth getting-it's somewhere on Avid's website, just not the easiest thing to find).
