News: Vidcheck's Vidchecker Embraces IMF
on Mar 23, 2016 at 11:45:01 pm

(Bristol, UK--March 23, 2016) Vidcheck announces a major expansion to the capabilities of its Vidchecker and Vidchecker-post automated quality control software with the addition of new features for checking Interoperable Master Format (IMF) metadata and essence.

IMF status information displayed on the Vidcheck Task Monitor graphic user interface.

"IMF is a highly versatile file format with huge potential throughout the broadcast media business," comments Vidcheck COO Howard Twine. "I liken it to a cooking recipe delivering ingredients that can be combined in different ways to create variations on a central theme.

"Imagine that the IMF payload contains the right ingredients to make several types of omelette. One specific user or delivery platform may require say a ham omelette. The automation system on the receiving end then cooks the vital elements into the specified dish. Vidchecker alerts the cook if the ham or the eggs are missing, well before the customer places an order.

"IMF can accommodate a much larger amount of metadata than earlier-generation MXF files. A single IMF package can contain all the necessary video, audio, graphics, closed captions and metadata elements needed for worldwide reversioning. It greatly reduces the workload required to produce multiple self-contained master program files.

"For example, delivering a video-plus-overdubbed-audio file for a large number of language regions creates a huge amount of point to point data traffic. An IMF package can do this with much greater efficiency by carrying a single relatively large video file plus audio tracks for each required language. Related elements such as titles and credits for various regions and be handled in a similar way to reduce unnecessary repetition of data delivery. All can be stored in the IMF files as separate assets and combined when required.

"We have now enhanced Vidchecker and Vidchecker-post to check all this data and draw attention to any potential operational issues. Any problems detected in programme essence or the metadata container are clearly displayed on the user interface."

Developed around the SMPTE ST 2067-2 standard, IMF has already progressed to Application 2e (SMPTE ST 2067-21) which supports images up to 4K frame resolution plus high dynamic range. Application 2e is already being used by Netflix as an OTT service delivery format.

Vidchecker and Vidchecker-post with IMF metadata and essence processing will be introduced and demonstrated by Vidcheck on Booth SL5625 at the 2016 NAB Show, Las Vegas Convention Centre, April 18-21.

Designed for checking and repairing file-based video, audio and related metadata before and after distribution, Vidchecker is also used by broadcasters to ensure that the metadata, video and audio parameters and levels of media files received from post-production companies and content owners are correct for general transmission. Vidchecker provides a highly efficient server-based alternative to checking conformance by eye and hand.

Vidchecker can automatically and intelligently correct video and audio levels, including peak audio attentuation, and perform automatic video segment detection. Sub-SD, SD, HD, UHD, 4K, 8K and mixed workflows are supported. Alerts can be accessed in practically any language. The Vidchecker GUI is accessed through a web browser either on the local machine or remotely over a network.

Automated error correction options mean that detection and correction can be combined in a single uniquely powerful application. Options include automatic addition of bars and black to a file, PSE correction and transcoding to a user-definable 'house format'.

Vidchecker-post is a version of Vidchecker designed for low-volume users such as post-production houses, content distributors and smaller broadcasters who do not have the file-testing throughput requirements of larger companies. Like Vidchecker, it is easy to install and use, performing thorough checks of video and audio parameters, and checking video and audio quality. It intelligently corrects video luma, chroma and RGB component, and conforms audio peak and audio loudness levels to ATSC/CALM and EBU requirements.

About Vidcheck

Vidcheck (http://www.vidcheck.com) is a major innovator in the design and production of software for automated quality control and automated correction of file-based media. Vidcheck personnel have unrivalled experience in the quality control of file-based video, having been closely involved in this technology from its inception.

Vidcheck software is used by many of the world's leading broadcasters, content distributors, archive organisations and post-production companies. It provides a comprehensive check of the overall file, video and audio parameters and can perform intelligent correction of most common errors that can occur in the signal stream.

Vidcheck software automatically takes advantage of multi-core and multi-thread processors to process multiple files simultaneously. The software can be upgraded to add extra features or to achieve higher throughput.

Vidcheck is active globally via resellers in Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Africa and Australasia.
