Hi all,
I am taking on my first HD project next week on a new HDe. Previously I have been working on Media 100i and in the SD world.

We are shooting a commercial on a varicam (DVC Pro HD) on Friday. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a workflow? I am loading the footage through a Panasonic 1400a.

Thanks. I am by no means an expert in HD.

Make sure they shoot in 1080i as the HDe can't upconvert and will not work with 720 video yet. HD suite can upconvert with the OEM Kona 3 card.

Couple of other questions. After shooting in 1080i (thanks for the tip) - with DVCPRO HD it is best to load at 8-bit, correct? Also the deck has both firewire out as well as serial digital component outputs. Is there advantage of loading one way versus the other way?

Also I have read when using FInal Cut you have to be careful with fps/24p. Do I need to worry about anything like that with HDe? Planning on shooting 24p.

I alwys set at 8bit uncompressed. I think that you have to go into Media 100 HD through SDI, firewire won't take HD, it's for DV, useful because early versions of Media 100 HD didn't support firewire and there was no way to master DV to tape using the DSR 11 or 20 decks.

Are you going to shoot at 1080i or 24p? You post seems to say both. According to another post, Media100 demonstrated 24p support at NAB but that isn't shipping yet, so I don't know what you'd do with 24p media.

[Denali] "Also I have read when using FInal Cut you have to be careful with fps/24p. Do I need to worry about anything like that with HDe? Planning on shooting 24p."

You definitely need to check your workflow. Test it before shooting!!! Most likely if you acquire via SDI into FCP or M100 you will get 24 frames blown up to 29.97, which will be fine (although you won

My HD lingo definitely needs work :) -- all these different "i"'s and "p"s!

So if I understood all of this right - I think there is a lot more for me to understand but this is a start :)

To use the media 100 Hde shoot 1080i/60 --- Media 100 will not handle 720p - 24p as of yet? What sort of look does 1080i/60 have? Is it "film" like or very sharp video?

Does the varicam actually shoot 1080i/60?

Thanks for all the comments.

Correct, M100 can input and output 1080i60 and 720p60 today but nothing at 24p. I can't help you on the VariCam. As for the look, I think video cameras look like video, but that's just an opinion.

by way of clarification, Media 100 HD Suite can output 720/60 but it must currently still edit in 1080 - this is using the 'cross-convert' capability on the AJA card that comes with HD Suite

ok. so let's say i shoot 720p/24 (i have since figured out my 1080 vs 720's from my previous posts). I pretty much have to shoot 720/24p as it is for a commercial, needs to have the "24p film look" and can't look like super sharp digibeta as I would get with 1080i.

so let's say i have the 720p footage - it is for broadcast and not for film - so by no means do i need to finish at 24 fps. since i can only edit it at 1080i on media 100, can't i load/cross convert the 720p footage to 1080i - (whereupon the 24p gets convereted to 29.97)? and then output it from there? though whether you output at 1080i or 720p at that point i have no idea :)

i wonder if that made sense? i really appreciate the info and advice!

Sure, but you need some means to do the pulldown from 24 (actually it's probably 23.98) to 29.97. Maybe the deck can do that?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but isn't the camera capable of shooting 1080p in 30 frames? I have been shooting (with sony not panasonic) in 1080p (25 frames) and the workflow was a no-brainer. Perfect editing and perfect downconverting to PALmasters. No sweat. :-)

The camera could shoot 1080i. But the look of 1080i is super sharp like a sports event - in contrast to the "film-like" nature of 24p - so creatively it just doesn't work.
