Which Titling Software Works With Media 100i 8.0.2
on Mar 3, 2007 at 4:56:20 pm

I am having trouble figuring out which older version of Boris . . . as well as which flavor (Red, FX, Graffiti) to look for to do titling with my set-up. I am running Media 100i v8.0.2 on a Mac G4 with a Vincent card.

I mostly just want to make simple 2D titles and this all seems so much more complicated than it needs to be, but I have resigned myself to having to use Boris (my older version of M100 came with a simple 2D titler). I'm sure I'll enjoy the additional features and capabilities in Boris once I bite the bullet and learn the app, but for now I just need to know what to look for. The newer versions don't work with my set up, but I can't find guidance on the Artel site about which software matches 8.0x.

What will work with my software and which Boris do I need (unless there is a simpler solution I haven't found).

Thanks!!!

Graffiti 2.1.x should work with V8.0.x. And I think it even should have been included in your V8 upgrade (not sure about that). If you have Graffiti V2, the upgrade to V2.1.2 is free.
You should get up to speed with Graffiti quickly, I think. It is much better than the old Comet CG.

Thanks, Floh. That raises another problem. I don't have Graffiti 2.1 and they don't sell it and what they now sell won't work. Hmmmm. That's some catch, that catch 22. Know where I could buy one legitimately?

What about buying the upgrade to 8.2.3? I bet it comes with the proper version of Graffiti and you get some new features and bug fixes as well.

I would consider that, but cannot afford new hardware and don't believe the new stuff will run on this:
Machine Model: Power Mac G4
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 867 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
Memory: 768 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.2.5f1
Serial Number:

with this card
Name: DATX,Media100
Type: Other Multimedia
Bus: PCI
Slot: SLOT-3
Vendor ID: 0x1116
Device ID: 0xc000
Revision ID: 0x0004

My experience so far is that going to 10.3.9 in the same machine started creating kernel panics whenever I would try to import an audio or still image file. We went back to 10.2.8 and things calmed down and started working. I worry that even if I paid for the upgrade the newest (8.2.3) thing wouldn't work on this hardware configuration. I fear I am faced with sticking where I am. Maybe someone who has been able to stay on a hardware and software upgrade path would sell their legitimate Graffiti 2.1 install disk since they no longer need theirs.

Before I start posting on eBay I think I will call M100 on Monday AM. Thanks for your help.

Tiger V.10.4.8 works on a G4 with vincent card configuration on 8.2.3.a very well. It comes with the newest graffiti stuff. Go for it.

I have 8.2.2 running on OS10.3.9 with G4 867 vincent card. Steady as a rock! Slow renders on complicated graphix through boris but static titles don't need to be rendered for playback. Best of luck! Kind Regards, Chris K.

If you're running v8.0.2, they you'll be able to run 8.2.3a - Plus the updated OS that 8.2.3a supports, AND the update to 8.2.3a will provide better perfomace in m100. I remember the UI in 8.0 was really sluggish, and the combination of Mac OS updates and Media 100 software updates fixed that.
