Media 100 Producer

Creative Cow's Nick Griffin, a longtime Media 100 user who, like many, switched to Final Cut Pro a few years ago, explores the new Media 100 Producer, a new software-only editor from Media 100. Media 100 Producer offers a mobile and scalable editing environment as well as FireWire I/O and Panasonic P2 acquisition capabilities. Ideal for in-the-field or mobile editing, editors using Media 100 Producer can shoot using their Panasonic P2 camera and immediately begin editing; they can even off-load the media and continue to use their Panasonic P2 card. In addition, Media 100 Producer can use media captured by Apple Final Cut Pro, Media 100 i, 844/X, Media 100 HD, Media 100 HD Suite, Media 100 HDe, and Media 100 SDe systems to edit, composite, and mix and output via FireWire or export to DVD or web. Nick explores this latest offering from Media 100 and comes to some startling and positive conclusions. He gives it 4-1/2 Cows out of five. Why? read on...

Jim WiglerMedia 100 Producer Suite sure doesn't feel like a 4.5 COW
by on Jan 12, 2007 at 8:29:47 pm

I've been editing with the Producer Suite for about a month now and I would give it 3 COWS. It feels like a not ready for prime time program. Although people have talked about an "unavoidable" delay from deck to NTSC monitor, my FCP station doesn't do that. Media 100 Producer won't allow me start my DSR-1500A at 00:59::00:00. I also have to reboot frequently because of lock-ups and strange behavior. And finally, I can't export a movie and import it to Media 100 iXR for SDI playback into a Wired encoder on another machine.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim, What codecs are you using in Producer? What Codec are you exporting to from Producer? Media 100 i will ONLY work with the i codec - Producer will allow you to work with a TON of non-i codecs, so this could be affecting your backwards compatiblity.

I've worked with FCP in software only mode, and the output to my DV deck was NEVER synced to the playback on my desk top, unless your using FCP with some type of 3rd party hardware, such as AJA's I/O, then it might be different. So I guess I don't understand why the delay to your deck is such an issue so long as you have proper A/V sync there.

Jim WiglerThere is no delay from FCP to DSR-20 to NTSC monitor
by on Jan 12, 2007 at 9:01:19 pm

Thank you for responding, Arthur!

On my FCP setup the is simply no delay from my G5 & FCP to the deck and to the monitor. With Media 100 Producer, the is a noticeable delay starting from the keyboard of the computer. I press the spacebar to play and there is a 1/2 second annoying delay.

I export from producer using the Media 100 I codec and all the same settings as my Media 100 iXR program and it takes (according to the message I get) 7 hours to import a 20 minute program.

I just wish all of this would work correctly!

OK, well the FCP thing, maybe I haven't used FCP in a while, but I don't remember the video out put being in sync with desk top play back.

What version of Media 100 i are you using on your XR? The lengthy import thing was an issue that was supposedly fixed with Media 100 i Version 8.2.3 - If you haven't done that yet, try updating to 8.2.3a.

Actually, I have all the latest everything for my iXR. Actually, EVERYBODY has mentioned this mysterious "delay" with FCP, but I just don't have it. The application responds immediately and the monitor is instantly updated and in sync.

Ok, so if you're using M100 i XR version 8.2.3(a), and exporting to the i Codec - I'm still curious why you're seeing such long imports.

Let me ask again, what codecs do you use IN producer? Meaning, do you capture with Producer Via firewire? If so, are you capturing into the iCodec, or are you capturing into a DV codec? (Producer WILL let you capture from Firewire into the iCodec, I suggest doing this.)

When you render titles and FX in producer, are you rendering those into the iCodec as well??

I do understand that in-order to get video out via F/W you need to switch back to DV, but you should be doing all you aquisition/rendering to the iCodec if you plan to send this project back to m100i for mastering (to Mediapress, right?)

Let me know if this makes sense.

Jim, Have you tried the new m100 hd codecs in your v8 system. I was skeptical at first but they improved my render times via AE greatly in my 8.2.2 system. They also allow me to go into compressor with a m100 selfcontained. Maybe those codecs in your v8 system will help the import speed from producer. We have 2 M100s here and 2 FCPs in our offices. Both systems have their bugs. To be fair - I don't mind a short delay on play with M100 because I know it's going to play video and audio. With our FCP suites if you have a window the wrong size or in the wrong place or the wrong one open you don't get any audio. How much time have i wasted trying to figure that crap out! When all is said and done - if the world was perfect - they wouldn't need editors like us to show them how it "could be"! Floh sent me the link to these codecs under the string "Floh, Can you confirm." I hope it works for you. We all know the frustrations of the bay. Keep plugging away my friend - it's friday! (That means we only have two more days to meet our Monday deadline!) Kind Regards, Chris K.

Yes, I've tried the HD codecs, but they don't seem to be helping. By the way, just let me know if you want my (now dismantled) Media 100 iXR DV/SDI totally loaded + Magma expansion chasis system. Hopefully, it will help you out!
