I've build a 2-terabyte SATA Raid (formats to 1.8TB), using 4 Hitachi 500-gig drives (Sata II drives) set as Raid 0, mounted them in an eSata Sonnet cabinet, connected to an eSata Sonnet 4+4 card - - Sata II throughout the chain. Will this be enough to digitize and work with uncompressed 8-bit 720p?

Thanks in advance,

Larry Marshall

As you might know Media 100 HD does not work natively in 720p, it converts it up or down to 1080 or SD.

Hmmm... I'll plead a bit of ignorance here, as this is my first M100 HD project. You can choose between 720 and 1080 in M100's dialogue box for which format you are presumably digitizing and editing in, so I'm unclear that no matter what you select you'll be editing in 1080i... can you point me to a resource in the manual or some other resource that explains this further? 1080i is a bulkier format... needs more throughput and takes more drive space. Why then, the selection in M100 to choose between working in 720 and 1080?

And if so, I guess my question needs to be revised to "will the 4-drive 2TB SATA raid be fast enough for 1080i?

Thanks Floh...

Larry,

you can choose between various otput formats for the SDI outs, but you can only use SD or HD 1080i as the Media standards. And I would doubt that 4 SATA drives deliver enough performance for uncompressed 1080 streams. V11 which should be out in June (2006) does support compressed HD material...

According to their new product brochure, the new systems will support the following codecs: animation, Motion JPEG B, and "DV Codecs" (my quote marks.). Sounds vague... does that mean all flavors of DV codec: DV, DV-CAM, DVC25, DVCPro50, DVCPro100HD??

DV and DVCPro25 and DVCam are the same codec, only recorded to different tape formats. But yes, that

Larry,

I've heard that if you add another 4-drive array and connect it to the additional 4 ports on your Sonnett 4+4 card (tricky, but doable), then stripe all 8 drives as one RAID 0, you'll have enough bandwidth/speed to do HD at 1080i. At least some of the benchmarks at MacGurus would seem to indicate it's possible. But I honestly don't know, since I haven't done it personally.
