Switching board to different computer
on Apr 11, 2005 at 2:21:46 am

I was running media100 8.2 XR on a single G-4 800. I bought a G-4 Dual 1.4 with 1.5 gb. The computer is clean and I need to set it up with everything fresh. OS, SCSI, Media 100, Dual monitors, Internet, Photoshop etc.

What order would be best to make the transfer to the faster computer?

Should I take the Media 100 board out of the slow G-4 and put it in the new one first and then load the OS 10.3 media 100 8.2 and all my other programs? or should I load up the OS and programs before moving the board?

Should I uninstall the Media 100 software from the slower computer? I assume nothing will work without the board. Ideally I wish I could at least still open the monitor window to frame in film transfers that I do.

First time of doing something is always a bit scary. Any advice on where and how to move the board would be appreciated.

thanks,

Thanks Floh,
When I switched from OS9 and Media 100 7.5 to OS X with Media 8.2, I could not access any of my media stored on the external harddrives. So I just made sure the drives were clear and started over with fresh data on the new set-up.

But since I have formatted the external discs witht the MAC set up when I switch over to the new computer will I be able to access media and projects stored on those drives? Hopefully I can continue working on some projects on the new conputer that are not finished yet.

Jerome

Yes, there should be no problems there.

Is this a common problem? I'm about to switch to OSX and I have alot of footage I'll have to redigitize if thats the case.

The problem is that most RAIDs cannot be transferred to OSX. If you have striped together HDs e.g. with Remus or the ATTO software you probably will not be able to access these RAIDs under OSX; the drives have to be reinitialized.
What works nicely is to put your media files e.g. on a FireWire drive or an internal (non-striped) HD that is formatted as HFS+ (which for some time was also the standard filesystem under OS9). These drives will be recognized correctly under OSX and media files from these drives can be used under OSX also (if the drives are fast enough; otherwise you have to move the files back to your RAID under OSX).
