LUT Workflow - Best Practices
on Mar 9, 2016 at 11:55:51 pm

I am working in Premiere Pro CC and with LUTs and looks and was wondering when the best time in the correction work flow was to use them?

I've seen tutorials where the LUT or look is place on the clip after the initial color correction as well as afterwards.

I've also seen the correction made directly on the clip and then the LUT placed on an adjustment layer above. I as wondering if this meant the LUT is affecting the clip before the correction.

Any best practices tips for this workflow would be amazing.

Thanks!

it depends on what type lut it is. some luts can be gamma, others gamma and color.

for example:

Slog3 to Rec. 709 will change from log gamma and log color to linear Rec. 709 monitor for further grading. This is called a technical lut

artistic lut examples are:
lut crunches contrast or gives a "look" directly tied into an assumed color space like Rec. 709 with the curves and contrast "burned" in.
