G-Technology going EOL?
on Aug 12, 2019 at 11:42:55 am

I wanted to check out the G-Technology G-Rack which was their NAS product, so I went to the g-technology.com web site. It auto redirects to shop.westerndigital.com and here, in Desktop options there are only 4-bay G-Speed Shuttle drives. No 8-bay drives, and no G-Rack.

So, does anyone know if G-Technology is going EOL?

yes -
the G-Technology GRACK12 is no longer manufactured.
At $33,000 for a 12 bay - well, it's hard to compete with QNAP and Synology.

With G-Rack 12 confirmed as EOL, have any users devised their path forward? Since the G-Rack was a reskinned SuperMicro chassis, has anyone experimented with the G-Rack head unit communicating with SuperMicro expansion (storage only) chassis?

I believe G-Rack will be professionally supported through the end of their original 5 year warranty period, fixing issues and patching potential security flaws, though no new software developments will be released.

Just trying to determine the best migration path as we need to expand our dataset, short of outright replacement with something like a Synology or QNAP product.

Hoping for tips from the hive mind.

Cheers,
Brett

I was G-Tech GRACK12 certified. I now pretty much only install QNAP and Synology systems.
I don't think you can purchase any QNAP or Synology product for $33,000 for a 12 bay. The price was quite high.

Both QNAP and Synology make excellent products. Both offer expandability, 10G and 40G ports, very fast performance, remote access and remote backup.

Thanks Bob! We are definitely looking at Synology and QNAP systems as outright replacements with the associated data migrations, but since we're already heavily invested in the G-Rack hardware, we're trying to see if anyone has experimented with mixing in the SuperMicro products on which the G-Rack was based. It may be a viable interim or even long term solution.

Cheers,
Brett
