Malware warning for QNAP owners
on Nov 1, 2019 at 5:28:33 pm

If you have a QNAP NAS, disconnect it from the internet right away as it may be vulnerable to malware (QSnatch) specifically targeting QNAP NAS devices. QNAP has issued the following advisory outlining the malware:

Unfortunately, malware & ransomware are perpetual dangers in the connected world. It can be tricky to balance security in a shared storage environment. We have an article that outlines some best practices & steps that can be taken in shared environments:

Since my model does not show up in the Maleware list of models can I assume I am "safe"? I can't download it unless I choose a model and mine is not listed. Should I pick any of them and just run it?

Hi, this is an interesting discussion.
Is it safe to connect the storage online?
What are the precaution user can do to limitate the danger?
Thanks.

no, its not safe. But for now, for the case of QNAP, they wrote and posted the Malware remover on 11/5/2019, so that problem is over.

But just like with any PC, any Mac, any computer (like your bank account) - if you are on line, there is always a risk. There is a risk of your money being stolen, and there is certainly a risk of you picking up a virus. Which is my many companies either have redundant backups that are off line, or keep the entire shared storage system off line.

But today, with the convenience of remote access of your media over the internet, many people take the risk.
