Surround Sound issues on output
on Aug 20, 2019 at 12:40:07 pm

I added this to an older post but no pick ups from the orginal responders so I'll post this as seperate:

I now have a set up for surround sound from Final Cut Pro X using a Behringer USB router to send all channels via a 5.1 surround amp. System preferences recognizes this and sends both in and out.

NEXT PROBLEM: So I can set up FCP surround project, then mix for surround sound and then I have to export. I've tried making a blu ray but internal FCP DVD settings will not complete the task and it stalls at 66 per cent ever time - any ideas? SHould I try for a compressor output and output sound an image? If so what settings would people advise to the n burn i toast (say?) or even the old Encore?

Because I create exhibitions I run my Pro res 4k files from Quicktime Pro 7 through a mac mini to keep quality up - So a second question is how do I route the surround sound into the quicktime pro file on output from FCPX? I've tried MXF and used external players live Elmedia - but the sound resolutely stays in left right and centre - but not back. I also tried Pro res in quicktime and then opened the file and went to sound properties to ckeck all channels are there - but still only front speakers plus centre works.

Any ideas to get a full surround sound (which isn't just a stero signal faked into surround using the pro-logic set up which if I understand it correctly is just a simulated Haffler Hookup).

I possibly know just that iota too much to understand it properly. Basically Help!

I make surround DVD/Blu-Ray exporting the six audio tracks and making an AC3 in Compressor, assigning them to the correct channel (L, R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs).

Warren thanks for responding. I'm finding surround sound a hard core learning experience... So can you run me through that in a tiny bit more detail?

You say: "I make surround DVD/Blu-Ray exporting the six audio tracks and making an AC3 in Compressor, assigning them to the correct channel (L, R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs)".

So you're saying:
1. output image track as pro res
2.
a) export six separate audio tracks - how do you export LFE as separate? (so what settings out of FCP and what format?)
b) Or are you using compressor as a destination for the sound output?
c) Or is it then take six separate audio tracks into compressor and output AC3
3. Then combine the AC3 and Pro res in something like toast?
4. Or ignoring all of that simply use Compressor's set up for Blu Ray H264 as a destination and then author in toast and allow Compressor to select correct channels

And you're avoiding MXF's completely? Baring in mind they must be asking for delivery in a file something like that?

The thing is with all of this it takes another to show you exactly how to do it then it becomes easy (I come from imaging so sound rattles my cage)

Thanks in advance

[Terry Flaxton] "So you're saying:
1. output image track as pro res

***Yes I out put as ProRes if that is the mastering codec being used.

2.
a) export six separate audio tracks - how do you export LFE as separate? (so what settings out of FCP and what format?)

***I export each track separately, (L, R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs). Most times I mix in an audio suite so a proper LFE track is created. If you are not sending anything specific to the LFE, and anything below 80Hz roll off will go to the LFE, there won't be one.

b) Or are you using compressor as a destination for the sound output?

***No. I set up an audio 5.1 session in Compressor and assign each channel correctly and render as an AC3 file.

c) Or is it then take six separate audio tracks into compressor and output AC3

***Yes!

3. Then combine the AC3 and Pro res in something like toast?

***I use Adobe Encore to author Blu-Rays, I guess you can do it in Toast, or Compressor.

4. Or ignoring all of that simply use Compressor's set up for Blu Ray H264 as a destination and then author in toast and allow Compressor to select correct channels

***If you go the Compressor method you have to make sure you assign the audio tracks correctly.

And you're avoiding MXF's completely? Baring in mind they must be asking for delivery in a file something like that?

***I don't need MXF unless that is delivered to me.
