Relink mov to R3D
on Jul 16, 2018 at 4:15:04 pm

I have a project that has already be roughed together with .mov proxy files created during the shoot. I need to relink to the R3D files. Each folder contains the .mov and multiple 4gig R3D files.

I've tried the method of simply relinking in FCPX, but it only relinks back to the .mov.

I've tried opening Red Cine X Pro and was able to import an exported FCPXML. When I imported that into Red Cine and relinked the files, I was left with a super long timeline with gaps. All the clips were there, but full length. They weren't trimmed or edited.

Seems like the Red Cine workflow is the answer, but it doesn't like my FCPXML.

Using newest versions of FCPX, MacOS, Red Cine.

Ok, got it to RedCineX. Had to use XtoCC to create a regular XML. Relinked to the R3D files no problem. Now want to export back as FCPXML. Using the export (shallow) function in RedCine only sends back a FCPXML of the clips. There's no sequence/project when I import to FCPX. What am I missing?

RCX kinda sucks with FCPXML. Actually, no, it doesn't kinda suck, it does suck.

Export a shallow XML, and then use SendToX to translate.

That worked. Except now I have a bunch of unlinked wav files in the browser and of course the audio is offline for all the RED clips in the timeline. Luckily we're not really using audio this video. But the clips did have dual stereo tracks on the original red files. I'd love to know what went awry there.

You mean the audio didn't relink?

Was the audio on the R3D the same as the Proxies?

It was rough edited with the ProRes proxies from the set. Then I exported that as FCPXML and used XtoCC to make it XML. Then imported into RedCine and relinked to the R3Ds and all was well. Of course the audio was now represented as 4 tracks in the RedCine timeline. Then I exported the timeline as XML and used send to X to convert it to FCPXML. Imported to FCPX and the timeline is fine, except the clips are synced clips. Open them up and they're the R3D clip synced to a wav that doesn't exist anywhere and never did. It's like send to X or RedCine just decided to make that part up. There have never been any wav files associated with the project. Try to relink them and it even gives a file path but nothing created any wavs. Weird. I'd prefer it too if it were a timeline with the original R3Ds, not synced clips.

I see. So the audio that is now "wavs" was probably the original audio in the Proxy movies.

All the R3D project I do usually have separate, discrete audio, so I can't say that I've seen this before.

Try opening the shallow XML in Resolve (if you have it) and see what the audio does.

Where were the proxies made? On the camera during recording or later?

Do you still have access to the audio in a earlier timeline? You could always detach that audio and copy/paste it in to the relinked timeline.

Nah the original proxies from the shoot were just 1080p ProResLT with embedded PCM audio.

[Bret Williams] "Nah the original proxies from the shoot were just 1080p ProResLT with embedded PCM audio.
"

I understand, but in the translation, that information somehow got changed to "wavs" instead of just linking to the audio of the Proxy movies.

I would try Resolve and see if that works. Resolve can link to the R3D too (although it's a bit trickier) and export to FCPXML.

Next time. Haven't downloaded latest resolve yet. Good enough for today without the audio thankfully. Thanks for your assistance as always!

I spoke too soon. It actually appears now that when redline linked the files, it only relinked the mov to the first of the r3d files. So if the mov required the 4 4gig files to be stitched together, it only linked to the first, and then just froze the last frame for the rest of the duration. What a mess.

[Bret Williams] "What a mess."

No doubt. There are a long list of gotchas with Red.

Again, were the proxy files made with RCX, or where they shot at the same time and recorded in camera?

Sometimes, the format of the media card in the Red can screw this process up (Fat32 vs UDF).

Usually RCX can relink to all the media, though, without the freeze frame.

Another process to try is to make a duplicate timeline in FCPX, strip out all the audio and unnecessary footage (like anything that is not Red originated) and try it on an audioless XML and see if that works.

That should get rid of your sync'd clips too.

I had to just get our first draft with the 1080p files. Will have to relink later, maybe try the Resolve route.

I wasn’t on set, but I’m guessing the proxies were made in camera as they sit in the same folder with each R3D file on the card structure.

So the files shouldn’t be spanned? Some of the files have 4 or 5 4.03gig parts. Short clips, but they shot 8k!

The R3D files will span no matter.

If the card was formatted fat32 the movs will span after 4Gigs. If formatted UDF, the mov will not span.

Do you get the freeze frames in RCX as well?

Having the same problem with a shoot where we used a red weapon helium to generate 8K r3d’s and 2K prores proxies. Imported the proxies to fcpx to start the edit and then wanted to relink to full res versions when picture locked. Fcpx crashes constantly when we try and relink the first one - can not do it.

I wonder what would happen if you pulled the movs out of the card directory?

I typically generate proxies with RedCineX and can link/relink back and forth from mov to R3D very easily.

The movs are in a different directory, though, separate from R3D.

I’ll test tomorrow, but I’ve got a feeling that it still won’t work due to 2 things; the fat32 structure that breaks the movs up into smaller chunks, and in turn I think this causes issues with matching timecode.

Yes, I've heard about it causing many problems.

Nope. It works! A bit of a pain to open all those folders and move out the movs, but when you relink and point to the directory for the r3d files, it links them perfectly, spans and all. The problem before was choosing the first of the span caused problems, and choosing the folder choose the mov.

But, when I relink i found that the media is now zoomed way in, even though it’s set to fit. I just reselect fit and it pops into place. Rebooting might have fixed.

PS - little known fact. If FCPX is open and running, you can move the media in the finder and it will keep track. So if you want to move the movs to another folder, do it while FCPX is open and you won’t have to relink them. Some sort of quantum entanglement feature.

Sweet.

Ha! Yes it’s handy. It’s been that way since some OS update. It worked at the end of FCP7 too.

Now that I’ve relinked it all I can State definitively that the 2016 MBP does NOT play back an 8x8 grid of 8k Red Raw footage. WTH? Not even in better performance mode. What a piece of junk! :P
