Captions to Titles

I've created a real simple app (time bombed beta) to convert your caption project to one with subtitles.

The app installs my TextUp Motion Title. This title will be used in the converted project.

Usage is simple: export XML, in the app set font and font size and drag the XML to the app. Alternatively drag the project from FCP browser to the app window.
The conversion is really very fast.
The changed XML will be saved to the desktop with a original project name plus " subs" name.

Once the XML is loaded in FCP you "batch set" things like line leading, outline, shadow etc.

Download the app here:

Comments welcome.

Thanks Andreas, Just what I was looking for!

It does not work for me for whatever reason.

No matter what I tried for step 2), I got the same error:

XMLSave: No such file or directory

Here is a short (lees than 2 mins) video in which I demonstrate the problem.

Thanks man!

First make sure you got the latest version.

Then check the preferences.
The path for auto-save must exist otherwise set a new one - or deselect all the "auto things"
Make sure all captions are connected to the primary storyline.

Awesome! Thanks for the swift answer - I
explicitly chose an auto-save folder and tried again - worked! ☺

Got a warning that not sure what it means, but here it is for the sake of perfecting the cool tool:

Thanks!

Hi again, I moved to Mac Pro 15 2018 and after downloading the latest version an making sure all your previous recommendations were set, I made a try to use the Converter - getting this no matter what I try in the settings, automatic or manual:

An unexpected error occurred in importing the media. (asset: /fcpxml[1]/resources[1]/asset[20])

Any ideas?

This is a media error - no chance.
Make a caption only sequence and try again.

Hey man, I'm back with a solution for the above error and a workaround for my previously posted warning.

1. There is an annoying bug in Final Cut Pro X, that even after all processing is done, and all the files are consolidated in the project (I have the "File: copy to library storage location" enabled in preferences, after reopening the ALL DONE project, some files are mysteriously missing, and some elements are still with a dotted line above, as if some processing still needs to be done. And yes, there is the V check, stating that all background processing has been finished.

Anyway, I had no idea, but 5 files have been somehow "lost" from the project, even though they were in the source files, and I had not moved the originals.
There was this annoying yellow exclamation mark on the project name, symbolising that something IS missing.
I tried manually relinking files, but none were missing (according to FCPX)
However, 5 files were missing, and that's why I got the
"An unexpected error occurred in importing the media. (asset: /fcpxml[1]/resources[1]/asset[20])"

WTF?!? Something is very wrong here but it does not make any sense!

I had an idea to manually "Consolidate Event Media" (clicl on the project -> File -> Consolidate Event Media),
and I got errors for 5 different files that were in the source media, but were somehow ,missing from the project.

Anyway, I dropped the files into the media browser and everything got right.

That made XCC functional again, as import did not fail now.

However, I was still getting that annoying warning about "invalid option key was specified".

So what I did, is create a compound clip (ALT + G) from al the video files, and tried again.

This time everything worked like a charm, without errors or warnings.

Hopes this info is helpful to someone, thanks for the support Andreas!

Can one assume the matter pretty much has taken care of itself with 10.4.4? 😉

[Robin S. Kurz] "Can one assume the matter pretty much has taken care of itself with 10.4.4? 😉
"

That's true. If you are a fan of the 60's to late 2000's subtitle styles 😎
On SRT import you better don't use colors.
If you convert SCC or ITT to SRT it doesn't matter - styles etc are lost anyway.
