.mlv files

i've been given a variety of video files for editing a project.

among them are .mlv files.

i've not come across these before, but looking around, i assume they're something to do with magic lantern.

i can't import them directly into FCPX (10.3), and can't look at them in VLC etc.

internet search keeps directing me to RAW and dng files in connection with magic lantern, and i can find very little help re these .mlv ones.

can anyone suggest a simple workflow for getting them into a format that i can edit on FCPX?

as the rest of the files in my project are mostly movs and mp4s i'm probably not overly concerned at keeping all the advantages of the raw format. i'm more interested in making them importable and getting on with the edit.

Haven't crossed paths with .mlv files in a long time. Mostly because I refuse to take them and make whoever's supplying them do the conversion first. Not sure if the process has changed recently - it's been a couple of years - but you need to install a command line app called mlv_dump and so some arcane command line stuff to get it to convert the mlv file into Cinema DNG then work from there.

I've lost my bookmark to the download but you should be able to find links to the Mac version the app on the Magic Lantern site.

thanks for the pointers jeff.

searching for mlv_dump took me to some nerdy forums where people were having difficulty getting command line instructions to work on sierra.

what fun?

i think in future i'll follow your principle and demand that the originator does the conversion!

meanwhile, if anyone can suggest a simpler solution on sierra, i'd be very grateful, otherwise, i'll have to wade into these murky fora and get my terminal chops going!

If these are mlv Magiclantern RAW files use RawMagic available in the App store. Easiest way to covert to cinemaDNG. No command line. I do this all the time. Once I have them converted as a file sequence in a folder the same name as the MLV file, I bring into Resolve and do a quick grade/balance and batch export to ProRes.

At the end you can go back to the DNG files for a final color grade.

i got all hopeful seeing this post.
i assumed they were blackmagic, yes.
however, i downloaded RawMagicLite, and it just doesn't recognise any of the mlv files - they're all greyed out, so i guess they're either corrupt, or they're some other kind of mlv file - is that a thing?

It looks like you have to buy the paid version to read the .mlv files. The lite version only reads the .raw files that Magic Lantern used for their first version of RAW recording.

ha. well i wasn't going to pay to do this little job! have handed back the files to originator and said he'll have to convert them if he wants me to do something with them. best option.
